It's All About the Beer, Buddy

Hello once again ladies and gentlemen, guys and gals, to another edition (be it a tad late!) of It's All About the Beer, Buddy!

Today... We continue to delve into this WONDERFUL amber liquid that we all know and love...

I have decided to sneakily discontinue my other blog, and add it to this. So all you readers (there may be some!) who were reading about me "drinking around the world" this is where that blog continues... And to all my new readers to this blog, you will see what I have been doing kinda "behind the scenes" with my other blogs.

With my previous blog, I was tasting as many beers as possible, and reviewing them, giving them a score out of 10. Here I will be doing the same, and I will be starting with a few beers that I have been having "around the traps" as you would say...

I will be trying to taste, swig, skull and drink my way through as many beers, lagers, bitters, stouts, porters, malts, ales, red and white's as I can, and I have also decided to add the "other beers" to this - namely (so far!) ginger beers and root beers. Also through as many styles of beer (here goes - amber, blonde, brown, cream, dark, fruit, golden, honey, india pale ale, light, lime, pale, pilsner, red, strong, radler and wheat - and please let me know if I've missed any!) that I can, and review them. And I would absolutely LOVE for you to put your "two cents in" as it were, so please, put your comments down so we can all sit and discuss this wonderful drink! And I know that I won't see eye to eye with everyone, but I tell you, I'm going to enjoy doing it! ;)

I will be "judging" (if you would like to call it) on 10 areas which I think are important to a beer. And when I can, I will be getting some other fellow drinkers, local and international, to do some judging with me when I can.
They will be:

  • Sight - The colour, the fizz, the pour, the head
  • Smell - the aromas, the scents
  • Taste - the first taste, which to me is most important
  • Feel - the feel in the mouth and on the tongue, temperature
  • Aftertaste - the taste after you have swallowed
  • Pleasure - the feel of the beer after the above has happened, if it makes you smile, if you look at the people with you with a "oh wow" or a "crap"
  • Ability - where it could go, who could drink it, and what you could drink it with, can you smoke with it
  • Encore - whether you could have it again or not
  • Reputable - If it's got a reputation, or new, or needs more empty bottles
  • Purchase - If it's easy to get, or if it has to be imported
I'm not a total expert, but if you have been drinking a while, you probably could call someone like me, an aficionado? Well... That's what I call me! :)

I would really appreciate the feedback ladies and gentlemen. So without further ado...

MY FIRST REVIEW...
numero uno, une, bat, un, jeden, een, etc...

Ladies and gentlemen...

BREWDOG - PUNK IPA - POST MODERN CLASSIC
ALC.VOL 5.6%

Oh boy... I'm actually kind of nervous! My first real review! But the anticipation is killing me... So off comes the cap...

This has a wonderful nose. The smell of citrus and (maybe) a slight honey scent? I like these types of beers. I like IPA's especially. Maybe because of my mother coming from India? But liking these, doesn't give me a bias to them. Not even in the slightest.

A 'Post Modern Classic' is a bit of a oxymoron. And I'm a walking one of them, but you can understand where they want the beer to be - in the future, still being sold, and being sold by the dozen. It's okay to want, but it's totally different to do.

I do like the colour. It's a bit darker than some of the IPA's that I've had, especially the Aussie ones. The clarity is very high, and there isn't too much fizz. I like that

The taste - okay... (gulps) I think that this needs to be sold in hot climates, like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India. If it isn't already, it should be. I could have this with prawns or fish, especially something cooked on the BBQ, with some dill and lemon, salmon even. You could also have it with good street tucker, like at your local market stalls, or street stalls in Asia and Europe. Prague would go nuts for something like this. Great to have in the 'arvo' (afternoon for all you non-Australians), with some chips. This would be great with Tapas.

PUNK ON TOUR - available in bottle, can or on draft in special places (I haven't seen it on tap yet personally). But I may have to "hightail it" to one of their bars to experience it fully. And they have been opening 50 bars - and counting.

Brewdog do have others that I will be trying, such as the Doodlebug, Stone, Mikkeller, Oskar Blues, and the Paradox, which I have heard, is a belter!

Well, here comes my grading. And I would like to you see you all go out and get this beer, and leave some comments on the blog on your rating on the ten points that I am judging and reviewing all the beers that I will be having.

Here goes...

  • Sight - looks the goods, head was fluffy, colour vibrant and clear - 7
  • Smell - fascinating, with citrus scent obvious - 7.5
  • Taste - good drop - 7.5
  • Feel - thought it a bit weak - 6
  • Aftertaste - nice, no unusual flavours - 7
  • Pleasure - I do like it, and would tell people to have one - 7.5
  • Ability - this does have the ability to become a big seller in my opinion, as I said, in the hotter regions - 8
  • Encore - I could, but it would have to be rather a hot day - 6
  • Reputation - It's coming up, more work to be done, still a young beer - 6
  • Purchase - first time I've seen it and tried it, but I'm sure it won't be the last - 6
TOTAL SCORE = 69/100
So I'll make it a 7/10

Nice drop for the first beer off!

So - now the rest is up to you! Go out and grab one of these and give me your own rating in the comments, keeping in mind the 10 points that I am judging the beer on. Everyone is different and everyone has their own personal favourite. So let's see those scores!

Until next time!

Cheers!
